A couple of weeks ago we returned to Cosy Club in Basingstoke Festival Place to enjoy a lovely dinner and a couple of drinks. I loved going to their opening event and looking around - the surroundings at Cosy Club are, well, cosy! I loved the warm dim lighting, quirky chandeliers and decor, and hot food plus delicious cocktails. It's the perfect place to relax at after a long week.
Cosy Club in Basingstoke has a menu to suit everyone, with a special menu for vegans and those needing to eat gluten free. The restaurant is the perfect place to gather as a big group without worrying that someone will feel left out or have a limited menu to eat. Their burgers looked delicious and I honestly need to come back to try their creations - but that evening I opted for something a little more light and tasty.
Our hostess Emily was friendly, chatty and inviting - she recognised me from the opening night because she remembered the dress I was wearing, which I'm happy made a memorable statement! She guided us through the menu and took our drink orders. My brother Max kicked the evening off with a cocktail, and I opted for a white Sauvignon Blanc named 'Wanderlust'. How can you not with a name like that?
We decided to have the bread and olives, and share some tapas for starters - although everything looked amazing, we opted for: squid and chorizo pan friend in red wine and garlic, served with mixed leaves and butter bean aioli; crispy sesame chicken with a soy and ginger dipping sauce; and Mediterranean mezze plate with falafel, tzatziki, hummus, baby kale, heirloom tomatoes, pickled red cabbage, pomegranate and toasted seeds, served with flatbread.
I love tapas - having a variety of food to pick from and sample a little of everything is the way to go! It's also so social having everyone tuck in and share food. The tapas were delicious - I particularly like the squid which wasn't battered (everywhere has it battered these days and it's getting old) so the taste of the squid really came through. Max absolutely loved the sesame chicken - he even went as far as saying it's his favourite chicken dish, the combination of the zingy sauce and succulent chicken wrapped in a crust was delicious! The mezze plate was packed full of goodness and different tastes - perfect to order along with other tapas to enjoy tastes of the Mediterranean. The tapas dishes would go perfectly with a group of friends gathered around a table for cocktails.
A short wait after we finished with the tapas, our mains came out - Max ordered the 28-day aged sirloin steak with thick cut chips, roasted tomato and a wild rocket & parmesan salad; and I ordered the Super Food Bowl which was made up of avocado, hummus, coconut, coriander & edamame rice, baby kale, heirloom tomatoes fennel, radish & dill salad, pickled red cabbage, soy & ginger cucumber, pomegranate & toasted seeds. Now I know what you're thinking: my main sound suspiciously like the Mediterranean mezze plate from our tapas - and it was pretty similar which was my oversight, or more like my body as screaming at me for nourishment after a week of pretty rubbish food. But the Super Food Bowl tasted amazing - it was filled with flavours and textures to keep my mind and tastebuds entertained. The dish was very filling as well - which was the ideal meal to have when I felt like I wanted nourishment but was hungry as well. I love these superfood bowls - they are a brilliant way to enjoy food, and get all the nutrients your body needs, and keep to a healthy eating plan if you have one. They're also so fun to eat!
Max really enjoyed his steak, cooked to his liking, and an Estrella beer to go with it - one happy boy sat opposite me! I had a taste of the steak and it was full of flavour and tender - perfect. We both really enjoyed our meals but were defeated at the end - plus, I have to admit I wanted to have something sweet to finish the evening so I saved a little bit of room at the end.
When we had a peek at the pudding menu, I couldn't resists the Salted Caramel Cheesecake with butterscotch sauce and sweet & salty popcorn (I know, heavenly), and Max opted for the Mini Cinnamon Doughnuts with toffee apple and chocolate dipping sauces. Pudding heaven, am I right? The cheese cake was delicious - so fluffy and I love the contrast between the crunchy popcorn and soft filling; as well as the contrast in sweet with a hint of salt in flavour. The doughnuts were so light in texture, packed with flavour and the perfect sharer if you couldn't manage a pudding on your own!
We had a fab evening at Cosy Club in Basingstoke - I honestly would have loved to slump over in one of the comfy chairs with a cocktail after the meal, alas I had to drive home instead. I will definitely be back to visit Cosy Club in Basingstoke for their delicious food and warm atmosphere - especially as you can catch cocktails happy hour, and get 3 tapas for a set price!
